Azerbaijan's Baku to host talks on urbanization, transport, and tourism at COP29

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 30. The COP29
events in Baku on 20 November will include separate discussions on
urbanization, transport, and tourism to discuss steps to improve
the environmental situation in these sectors and green trends,
Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture
of Azerbaijan, Anar Guliyev said at the Baku Climate Action Week,
Trend
reports.
He noted that the discussions will specifically address
sustainable construction and the use of building materials that
reduce greenhouse gas emissions on November 20.
"This year, in connection with COP29, we have held several
roundtables on sustainable construction, addressing issues of
urbanization along with water supply and waste management," Guliyev
reminded attendees.
He highlighted that the committee is consulting with the
International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on the "Green Cities" project
as part of the Green Cities Action Plan.
"Cities contribute to 17 percent of global greenhouse gas
emissions. Addressing this issue requires inclusivity and greater
private sector involvement," Guliyev stated.

He added that the legal framework for implementing green
technologies and infrastructure is evolving, particularly
concerning the installation of solar panels on buildings.
"Renewable energy sources are integrated into Azerbaijan's
long-term urbanization plan, considering new climate challenges,"
Guliyev emphasized.
He also reminded that the World Urban Development Forum will be
held in Baku on May 18-22, 2026.
