The United States shares the concerns of the OSCE/ODIHR Office regarding the elections in Azerbaijan. Matthew Miller, Spokesperson of the US Department of State, announced this at Wednesday’s Department press briefing.
"We [i.e. the US] share the observation and concerns of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights [(ODIHR)] monitoring mission regarding the Azerbaijani September 1st parliamentary election. And we urge Azerbaijan to implement the OSCE’s previous recommendations as well as ones that we understand to be forthcoming, and enable the exercise of fundamental freedoms by its people consistent with its constitution and international commitments," Miller said.
Members of the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission had stated that the aforesaid snap parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were not competitive, with violations of fundamental freedoms.
