Yakutia,oneofRussia'slargestandmostchallengingterritories,isexperiencingincreasingenergydemandsamidindustrialgrowth.Therisingdemandforenergyresourcesrequiresinnovativesolutionstoensureastableandreliablepowersupplyinaregioncharacterizedbyitsremotenessandlackofcentralizedinfrastructure.Inresponsetothesechallenges,theRussiangovernmentisconsideringconstructingsmall-scaleAttheEasternEconomicForum(EEF),Yakutia'shead,A.Nikolaev,announcedplanstobuildasmall-scalenuclearthermalpowerplant(NTPP)intheregion.ThisinitiativeaimstoaddresstheenergydeficitthathasemergedduetoincreasedindustrialelectricityconsumptioninYakutia.
Since2021,withindustrialgrowth,electricityconsumptioninYakutiahasbeguntosurpassitsproduction.Toaddressthisissue,theRussiangovernmentapprovedaprojectinSeptember2022toconstructapilotsmall-scalenuclearpowerplant(SSNPP)usingRITM-200Nreactorinstallationsunderthefederalproject"NewNuclearEnergy."RosatomiscurrentlybuildingthisplantinthevillageofUst-Kuyga,withplansforittobeoperationalby2028.
